Record-Breaking Florida Tourism: Domestic Travel Surges as Canadian Visitors Drop 15%

Florida has long been the “Gold Standard” for American vacations, and 2025 cemented that reputation. The preliminary estimate of 143.3 million total visitors represents a 0.2% increase over the previous record set in 2024. This growth was driven almost entirely by the “home crowd.”

The Power of the Domestic Traveler

Domestic visitors—Americans traveling from other states—accounted for a staggering 91.5% of all Florida tourism in 2025. Roughly 131.1 million Americans packed their bags for Florida’s beaches, theme parks, and springs last year. This 0.3% increase in domestic travel provided the necessary cushion to keep the state’s economy booming, even as international winds shifted.

Overseas travel also showed resilience, growing by 4% to nearly 9.3 million visitors. Markets like Brazil (+10.4%), the United Kingdom (+6%), and Colombia (+6%) have become vital pillars for Florida’s international portfolio.

The “Great White North” Retreat

The most striking figure in the 2026 report is the sharp decline in visitors from Canada. Traditionally Florida’s most reliable international market, Canadian visitation plummeted by 14.7% in 2025, with only 2.9 million visitors making the trip south.

Why are our northern neighbors staying home? Analysts point to a mix of economic and political factors.

Political Backlash: Rhetoric surrounding tariffs and geopolitical tensions has reportedly led to a “travel backlash.”

Economic Pressure: Fluctuating exchange rates and the rising cost of international travel have made domestic Canadian staycations more appealing.

Airline Shifts: Major carriers like Air Transat and WestJet have recently adjusted schedules, with some cutting summer flights to Florida entirely due to shifting demand.

Despite the double-digit drop, VISIT FLORIDA remains optimistic, noting that Canadian travel still represents about 2% of total visitation—a figure they describe as consistent with historical long-term trends, even if it falls short of the 4-million-visitor peak seen in 2019.

A Record-Breaking Finale

The momentum didn’t just happen in the summer. The fourth quarter of 2025 was the highest Q4 on record for Florida, bringing in 33.5 million travelers.

“Florida continues to set the standard as the top travel destination in the nation,” Governor DeSantis said in a press release. “We are delivering real economic benefits for our residents.”

This economic benefit is no exaggeration. Tourism in Florida generated an estimated $133.6 billion in economic impactin the previous fiscal year, saving the average Florida household nearly $2,000 in taxes annually.

Where the Growth is Happening

While some sectors faced headwinds, Florida’s infrastructure is evolving to meet the domestic surge:

Air Travel: Enplanements at Florida’s 19 major airports were up 2.8% in the final quarter of 2025.

Diverse Destinations: While Orlando and Miami remain titans, areas like Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and the Florida Keys reported strong luxury and family-oriented demand.

Latin American Surge: Beyond Canada, growth in South American markets—specifically Argentina (+17.8%)—is reshaping the “international” feel of Florida’s coastal cities.

The Road Ahead: Winning Back the Snowbirds

VISIT FLORIDA isn’t taking the Canadian drop sitting down. In late January 2026, tourism leaders announced expanded marketing efforts specifically targeting Canadian provinces.

“We’re doing what we can to make sure that visitation remains strong,” said VISIT FLORIDA President and CEO Bryan Griffin. The agency’s strategy involves emphasizing Florida’s “unmatched vacation experiences” to remind Canadians why the Sunshine State has been their winter sanctuary for decades.

As Florida looks toward the rest of 2026, the strategy is clear: keep the domestic base happy while diversifying international outreach. With a proposed $80 million budget for VISIT FLORIDA in the 2026-2027 fiscal year, the state is betting big that the sun will keep shining on its most important industry.
