Booking.com Research Reveals Disconnect Between Future Tourism Industry Skills Needs and Current Training, Highlighting Key Growth Areas in Hospitality

A new study by Booking.com has identified a skills gap in the European tourism accommodation industry, which has created a disconnect between the skills required for the development of the tourism industry in the coming years and the training priorities of the industry. The study, which surveyed 5,000 tourism professionals in Europe and conducted 200 in-depth interviews with industry and labor experts, examines how this skills gap could affect the development of the tourism industry in the coming years.

As the tourism industry continues to grow and change, this study has identified key areas for improvement, including digital, sustainability, and technology skills to cater to the increasing number of international visitors to the region. The study highlights how, though the industry recognizes the changing dynamics, they have not been investing in the right training initiatives to support the development of the industry in the coming years. This study has shed more light on how this skills gap could affect the development of the industry.

Future Tourism Growth: Disconnect Between Recognized Needs and Training Focus

The research reveals that while 59% of employers claim they are not currently impacted by skills gaps, there is a growing mismatch between the skills employers know will be essential in the future and the training priorities they currently focus on. With tourism’s rapid evolution due to technological advancements and the growing demand for sustainable travel, the gap between what is needed and what is prioritized for training is widening.

For instance, 82% of employers agreed that digital literacy will become critical to the tourism sector, yet only 16% are prioritizing this in their current training programs. Similarly, while 78% of employers recognize the need for more emphasis on leveraging technology for guest services and operational efficiency, fewer than 30% have made it a priority for training. This disconnect raises concerns about the future growth potential of the tourism sector in Europe, as businesses may not be fully equipped to meet the demands of an increasingly digital and eco-conscious tourism market.

The Role of Sustainability and Soft Skills in Tourism’s Growth

The study also highlighted the increasing importance of sustainability and soft skills in tourism workforce development, yet these areas are not receiving the attention they deserve in current training programs. 87% of employers forecast a rise in demand for sustainability and environmental management skills, yet only 11% are making this a priority in their training plans. Similarly, skills in sales, marketing, and revenue management were cited as crucial for future tourism success, but only 9% are addressing these areas today.

In addition, the research points to the need for continued development in soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability, which are critical in providing a high-quality customer experience in the tourism sector. While employers have placed more emphasis on short-term customer service gaps, there is still a need for a long-term strategy that nurtures these essential soft skills, which directly influence tourism growth by enhancing visitor satisfaction and fostering repeat business.

Employee Confidence in Tourism Skills: Is It Enough for Career Progression?

While 75% of employees felt confident in their digital literacy and other competencies, such as proficiency in hotel management systems and data-driven decision making, 36% of employees expressed that a lack of relevant skills was a barrier to their career progression. Despite employee confidence in their current skills, a disconnect remains between perceived competencies and the actual career advancement opportunities available in the tourism industry.

This reflects a broader issue within the tourism workforce—employees are seeking more structured development opportunities that will equip them with the future skills needed to progress in the industry. As tourism continues to evolve, there is a growing demand for professionals who can adapt to new technologies, sustainability initiatives, and market shifts. Addressing the skills gap through targeted training will be essential to ensuring that employees can contribute effectively to the sector’s growth and stay competitive in the global tourism market.

Overcoming Barriers to Upskilling: Ensuring Tourism Growth in a Competitive Market

For tourism accommodation providers, delivering effective upskilling programs presents several challenges, particularly in terms of costs and integration with daily business operations. According to the 2025 European Accommodation Barometer, high training costs and staff turnover are key barriers preventing businesses from implementing training programs at scale. However, the research found that many employers are willing to support employee development if cost-effective, quality, and localized training programs are available.

This presents an opportunity for the tourism sector to create more accessible and scalable training solutions, particularly through online training platforms, which could help overcome the barriers that many businesses face. The fact that half of employers are willing to support online training and that 88% of employees are eager to participate shows that there is strong potential for growth in the tourism workforce. However, it is essential that businesses invest in training that is aligned with the sector’s long-term growth needs.

Bridging the Skills Gap: Shaping the Future of Tourism Development

To meet the challenges of the future, the tourism accommodation sector must bridge the growing skills gap by prioritizing training in areas that directly support sector growth, such as digital transformation, sustainability, and technological innovation. Training initiatives must be forward-thinking and responsive to the evolving demands of the tourism market, especially in light of the ongoing shift towards more sustainable and tech-driven travel experiences.

Employers must also recognize the importance of soft skills, investing in training that enables employees to better serve customers and adapt to shifting market trends. By creating a more agile workforce, businesses can not only improve service delivery but also enhance guest satisfaction, driving tourism growth across Europe.

Investing in Tourism’s Future Growth

The research carried out by Booking.com has clearly demonstrated a need to renew a focus on workforce development in the tourism industry. With a growing and changing tourism market, skills development is a key aspect that will determine how well the tourism industry can adapt to changing demands and continue to grow. By investing in training programs that cover digital and sustainability skills, businesses can better equip their workforce for the future and ensure that they remain competitive in a changing global market.

The success of the tourism industry depends on how well it can invest in the appropriate skills and create a future-ready workforce. By bridging the skills gap, businesses can contribute to the growth of the tourism industry, leading to tourism development and a prosperous future for the European tourism industry as it navigates a changing global market.
