The United Kingdom has formally tightened its entry requirements, making Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) mandatory for eligible visitors starting 25 February. Under the new regulation, travelers from countries that previously did not require a visa must now secure digital approval before setting off for the UK. Those who attempt to travel without an ETA, eVisa, or valid entry documentation will be stopped before departure, as airlines are now obligated to verify compliance prior to boarding.

The updated system applies to nationals of 85 countries, including major travel markets such as the United States, Canada, France, and India. The ETA functions as a digital travel clearance, costing £16 and permitting multiple visits over a two-year period or until the passport used in the application expires, whichever occurs first. The authorization is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport, removing the need for physical paperwork and streamlining checks at departure and arrival points.

Air carriers play a central role in enforcing the new system. Before allowing passengers to board UK-bound flights, airlines must confirm that each traveler has secured the necessary authorization. This approach shifts part of the border control process to the departure stage, reducing the likelihood of inadmissible passengers arriving at UK ports of entry. Travelers who fail to obtain an ETA in advance risk denied boarding, disrupted plans, and additional travel expenses.

The introduction of mandatory ETAs aligns the UK with other countries that have implemented pre-travel screening systems. Similar programs are already operational in the United States and Australia, while the European Union is preparing to launch its own digital authorization framework. These systems are designed to enhance border security while maintaining visa-free access for short-term tourism, business trips, and transit.

British and Irish citizens remain exempt from the ETA requirement. However, they must still present valid proof of citizenship when entering the UK, such as a British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement. Certain expired British passports may be accepted at the discretion of carriers, though policies can vary. The exemption reflects existing arrangements between the UK and Ireland and longstanding citizenship rights.

The ETA requirement also extends to transit passengers who pass through UK border control during connecting journeys. Even if the UK is not the final destination, travelers who enter through passport control must hold the appropriate digital authorization. This closes previous gaps in entry procedures and ensures consistent screening across different categories of visitors.

Since its initial rollout in October 2023, the ETA system has processed more than 19 million successful applications. By January 2026, it had generated over £383 million in revenue. These funds are being reinvested into upgrading border infrastructure, enhancing digital systems, and modernizing immigration processes across the country.

The move toward mandatory ETAs represents a broader transformation of the UK’s immigration framework. Physical documents are steadily being phased out in favor of digital records. Over 10 million eVisas have already been issued, replacing traditional visa stickers and biometric residence permits. Individuals holding digital immigration status must ensure their online accounts are updated with current passport information to avoid complications during travel.

Further digital reforms are also taking effect. From 26 February, Certificates of Entitlement are being issued in electronic format rather than as physical endorsements. This change eliminates the need for repeated applications each time a passport expires, reducing administrative burdens and improving efficiency.

Applying for an ETA is designed to be straightforward. Most travelers use the official mobile application or online platform to submit their details. Applicants are required to provide biographic information, biometric data, and answer a series of security-related questions. In the majority of cases, decisions are delivered automatically within minutes. However, authorities advise travelers to apply at least three working days before departure, as some applications may require additional checks.

Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to the passport used in the application. There is no physical document to present; verification occurs electronically through airline systems and border control technology. This digital linkage supports the UK’s long-term vision of a contactless border experience, where identity and permission to travel are confirmed through integrated systems rather than manual inspection alone.

The enforcement of the ETA requirement marks a significant milestone in the UK’s efforts to strengthen border security while simplifying travel procedures. By conducting screening in advance of arrival, authorities aim to prevent individuals who may pose risks from reaching the border, while allowing legitimate visitors to experience faster and more efficient processing.

As international travel continues to rebound and evolve, digital pre-clearance systems are becoming a standard feature of border management worldwide. The UK’s ETA framework positions the country within this global shift, combining security measures with modernized technology to create a streamlined and forward-looking approach to managing entry.
