Greenland’s West Coast Experiences Warmest January on Record as Nuuk Sets Historic Temperature Milestone: Everything You Need to Know

In January of 2026, Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, set a new record in temperature. For the first time since record-keeping began in 1917, the temperature in January reached an average of 0.1°C (32°F). That is a temperature increase of 7.8° compared to the last 30 years of consistent climatological observations. That is an alarming increase for a climate region that is north of the 70° parallel. On the first day of the month, temperatures reached a staggering 11.3°C.

This new warmth isn’t limited to Nuuk. Spanning over 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles) from southern Greenland to the far north, new record highs are being set across other towns like Ilulissat in Disko Bay. There, the average January temperature was -1.6°C, 1.3°C warmer than the record set in 1929, and a shocking 11°C above the January average. The growing warmth over such a wide area exemplifies that climate change isn’t a ‘what if’. It’s here, and the impacts are being felt in the Arctic. For visitors, that means the Greenland of old is different from the Greenland of now, and the same will be true wherever else travelers may roam.

What Does This Mean for Travelers Planning to Visit Greenland?

There is no denying that Greenland is still a beautiful place to pursue adventure and remote travel, but travelers will have to accept that conditions will be even more unpredictable than ever before.

Thinking of going to the west coast of Greenland? You should know that the weather conditions have changed over the years. In the past, winters were the best time to go ice trekking, dog sledding, and ice exploration. Now, temps are higher than expected. As a result, ice conditions are changing. The sea ice that is relied upon for transport and activities are not as stable as they once were.

If you are going to take a cruise to see the coastline of Greenland, you may likely need to change your plans. The weather has been warming and ice has begun melting before it normally would. As a result, your cruise may need to change its planned course to include fewer fjords and glaciers. If you are set on Greenland and want to see the sights, it is best to go with the flow if you are on an ice-covered trade route and want to see the fjords and glaciers. If you want to go during the winter, it is wise to keep tabs on the weather conditions before you set off as these are the traditionally cold months.

When Should You Travel to Greenland?

Your preferences should determine when to travel to Greenland. Here’s the breakdown by seasons:

Summer (June – August): Great for adventurers. Daily temperatures average 5 – 10 degrees Celsius. This is when tourists go to Greenland to hike like the high peaks to see the fjords and ice cliffs. Sea kayaking is available and even kayaking to see the glaciers. This is the time to go to Greenland to see the whales. National parks are open to go through.

Fall (September): Great time to see the Northern Lights. This is also the time to go to Greenland because fewer tourists are present. Expect cold -1 to 6 degrees Celsius. The arctic tundra turns different colours.

Spring (May): If you want to be alone in nature, this is your chance. The ice is still present, but melting to create rivers to explore. The air is colder and cleaner, and the beauty of nature in Greenland is still unmagnified by man.

Winter (December – April): While the period of winter has historically been a time of dog-sledding and ice adventures, recent warming has made ice climbing and exploring ice sheets potentially unsafe. Travelers should expect cold weather and pack the right gear to stay safe and mobile on the ice and snow.

What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your Greenland Adventure

Traveling to Greenland these days with the ever-changing climate means some preparations and considerations.

Weather Changes: The weather can change in various degrees, so having multiple layers of clothing available, especially water-proof, and a solid pair of thermals is a must, to stay warm and comfortable.

Given that the ice is constantly melting, you should actively check what activities your desired tour offers, and be prepared for the possibility of the tour being switched to a hike, visit various land towns and cities that are located on the coast of Greenland and do land in the ice.

Due to climate change, planning to visit any of the following festivals in Nuuk, Ilulissat, and other snowed regions is almost impossible. With the bleak weather, you’ll have to change your plans and expectations quickly.
