In this regard, a professional partnership forum, organized by AMFK and VisitBalaton365 in Balatonfüred, Hungary, laid the foundation for an ambitious active tourism development program aimed at positioning Lake Balaton as a year-round destination. It is intended to extend the seasonal supply of the area in the spring and autumn months, which are really quiet periods of the year, thereby establishing the region as a prime four-season tourism destination.

During the forum, key actors of tourism reminded all that Lake Balaton needed to make its transformation into a four-season destination from a predominantly summer destination and open up to visitors during the whole year. “Strengthening supply and demand is necessary, and the development of active tourism possibilities has a central role in this work,” Péter Princzinger, Managing Director of VisitBalaton365, noted.

Active Tourism: A Key Driver for Growth in Hungary’s Lake Balaton Region

Currently, Lake Balaton and its surrounding area are Hungary’s most popular active tourism regions, attracting visitors for cycling, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Mirkó Petényi, Managing Director of the Active Hungary Development Center, emphasized that expanding active tourism offerings is crucial for the region’s future growth. He added that “a well-developed, interconnected active tourism offering could be the most important attraction for spring and autumn seasons.”

The region’s existing natural assets, such as the Hévíz Canal and Lake Balaton crossing, alongside its growing network of cycling trails, present significant opportunities for attracting visitors during the off-peak months.

Strategic Planning and Collaborative Efforts for Active Tourism

In the forum’s professional session, Ádám Bauer outlined the strategic planning needed to create a cohesive and seamless active tourism network across Lake Balaton. He emphasized the importance of integrating natural attractions with tourism infrastructure to offer a comprehensive, year-round travel experience. Additionally, Júlia Nagy, Managing Director of InnoTime Hungary Kft., which was commissioned to prepare the development program, presented findings from a research-based situation assessment. The data highlighted nature walks and hiking as key attractions for tourists, reinforcing the importance of promoting these activities beyond the traditional summer months.

Overcoming Challenges: Ensuring Sustainable Tourism Growth

A roundtable discussion during the forum tackled some of the key challenges facing active tourism development in the region. Three main topics emerged:

Infrastructure: Participants discussed the need for effective operational models, financing, and management responsibilities to support future tourism infrastructure development.

Data-Driven Decision-Making: Emphasizing the role of data in guiding tourism growth, the forum explored how technology and data insights could help optimize tourism offerings, enhance decision-making, and prioritize future investments.

Balancing Active Tourism with Sustainability: Discussions also focused on the need to balance the growth of active tourism with nature conservation and forest management, ensuring the region’s rich natural environment is preserved while attracting more visitors.

Moving Forward: A Strategic Plan for Sustainable Tourism

The discussions and proposals made at the forum will contribute to a development program being prepared by the Active Hungary Development Center. This program will be refined over the next few months with input from service providers, local governments, and the civil sector. The aim is to submit the final program to the Hungarian government by the end of 2026, positioning Lake Balaton as a sustainable and thriving four-season tourism destination.

A Bright Future for Hungary’s Lake Balaton Tourism

The initiatives discussed in the Active Tourism Forum are expected to define the future of tourism in the Lake Balaton region in Hungary. Thus, by promoting the expansion of active tourism, improving existing facilities, and advocating for sustainability, the region is moving in the right direction towards increasing the number of tourists within the region, not just for economic growth but also for the advancement of communities in the region. Thus, since tourism is fundamental in the economy of Hungary, the future of Lake Balaton as a premier tourist destination for both local and international tourists is guaranteed.
