Macao Kicks Off 2026 Chinese New Year with Golden Dragon, Dancing Lions, and Festive Roadshow Across the City

Macao has kicked off the Chinese New Year celebrations with a vibrant community roadshow organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) on the first day of the Chinese New Year, February 17. The event, held at the iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s and Senado Square, was designed to create lasting festive memories for both residents and visitors. The lively festivities featured a colorful Golden Dragon Parade, accompanied by dancing lions and an array of traditional symbols of good fortune.

The roadshow was officiated by prominent figures including MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes and other notable officials. They extended their New Year greetings and participated in an eye-dotting ceremony for the golden dragon and the dancing lions. The ceremony symbolized the start of the New Year celebrations, with a focus on prosperity and happiness.

A Spectacular Golden Dragon Parade

One of the most anticipated events of the day was the Golden Dragon Parade, which stretched an impressive 238 meters and was accompanied by 18 dancing lions. The parade featured a colorful display of traditional Chinese deities, including the God of Fortune, the three Gods of Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity, as well as the Chinese Zodiac Horse mascot, Entourage Boy and Girl, and Macao’s very own tourism mascot, MAK MAK. Together, these figures greeted the crowds and distributed golden ingots, symbolizing good fortune for the Year of the Horse.

The procession began at the Ruins of St. Paul’s, making its way to Senado Square, where firecrackers were lit to mark the official beginning of the Chinese New Year celebrations. As the parade continued, the golden dragon showcased its agility, greeting the people along the streets with vibrant, energetic movements that conveyed wishes of vitality and happiness for the year ahead.

Two-Day Community Roadshow Spreads Festive Joy

The community roadshow continues throughout the first and second days of the Chinese New Year, with performances and activities set to reach different districts. A variety of art troupes have been invited to perform across Macao, providing cultural entertainment for visitors and locals alike. Locations for these performances include the Anim’Arte NAM VAN, the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, and several other areas in the ZAPE district, such as Rua de Cantão and Rua de Xangai. These events are designed to bring festive joy to communities across Macao.

On February 18, the second day of Chinese New Year, the roadshow will continue in new locations, including the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Hong Kung Temple, and other key areas such as Taipa, Coloane, and the northern district. These events aim to share the festive spirit more widely, bringing together people from all corners of Macao to celebrate the occasion.

Grand Parade and Dazzling Drone and Fireworks Displays

Following the community roadshow, Macao will host a grand Parade for the Celebration of the Year of the Horse on February 19, the third day of Chinese New Year. This parade will take place near Sai Van Lake and will be a dazzling display of floats, vibrant costumes, and festive cheer. Additional celebrations will occur on February 28, the 12th day of Chinese New Year, when the festive atmosphere will continue to captivate the city.

Adding to the excitement, MGTO will host three sessions of Chinese New Year Drones and Fireworks Displays, combining cutting-edge technology and traditional pyrotechnics to create a stunning visual experience. These events, scheduled for February 19, February 23, and March 3, will light up the night sky with breathtaking drone light shows and fireworks, enriching the New Year festivities with colorful, mesmerizing displays.

Since 2023, Macao’s Chinese New Year celebrations, including the community roadshow, float parade, and drone/fireworks displays, have been recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of the “Happy Chinese New Year” celebrations, reinforcing Macao’s reputation as a major cultural and tourism hub.

ZAPE Gallop Gala – A Festive Destination Experience

In addition to the New Year celebrations, Macao is hosting the ZAPE Gallop Gala, a community activity that runs from today until March 1. This event takes place in the ZAPE district, focusing on both Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day celebrations. The activity includes festive installations designed to enhance the atmosphere and draw more visitors to the area. By encouraging spending at local businesses, the event aims to boost community engagement and foster a sense of connection between Macao’s tourism development and local enterprises.

The ZAPE Gallop Gala is an excellent example of how Macao is integrating tourism and community development. Businesses in the ZAPE district, along with several integrated resort enterprises, have launched special offers, including hotel accommodations, dining, and movie coupons. These promotions aim to enhance the overall visitor experience while encouraging tourists to explore more of the city.

Celebrating the Spirit of the Year of the Horse

With a focus on traditional cultural displays, modern artistic performances, and interactive community events, Macao’s 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations reflect the city’s rich cultural heritage while embracing innovative ways to engage residents and visitors. As Macao continues to grow as a premier destination for both tourism and cultural events, the celebrations of the Year of the Horse offer a fantastic opportunity to experience the energy, vitality, and cultural richness of this vibrant city.

Macao’s festive celebrations, through a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, ensure that both residents and visitors can enjoy an unforgettable start to the Chinese New Year.
