Middle East Flight Disruption Updates for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the GCC Amid Geopolitical Tensions: All You Need to Know

Recent changes in travel have been caused by flight disruptions across the Middle East. Most notably, travel to and from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region has been impacted. Airlines have either diverted routes or canceled flights altogether due to rising geopolitical tensions and the most recent guidance on the safety of air travel in the region. Several airlines have route changes and flight suspensions, but travel in the region is returning to normal.

In January 2026, some of the largest international airlines made changes in response to US-Iran tensions, and concerns regarding the safety of air travel. The tensions were exacerbated by notable US military presence in the region and increasing rhetoric from both the US and Iranian governments.

Changes and Cancellations by Airlines

Most major airlines have returned to normal operations, and travel has been restored to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, some airlines have made changes to their operations.

The Dutch airline KLM has resumed flights to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Israel. However, it has temporarily discontinued its stopover service for Tel Aviv flights in Paphos, Cyprus. They stated they are monitoring the situation and will adjust their timetable to allow passengers to reach their destinations as quickly as possible.

Lufthansa, the German flag carrier, has extended the cancellation of flights to Tehran until March 2026, with flights scheduled to resume on the 29th of March. On the other hand, low-cost Indian airline IndiGo has extended the suspension of flights to Almaty, Baku, Tashkent, and Tbilisi until the 28th of February. Another Dutch budget airline, Transavia, has ended her safety concerns regarding her flights to Dubai. In the same manner, Wizz Air has revised a number of western flight routes from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. As a result, there are technical and fuel stops in Larnaca, Cyprus, and Thessaloniki, Greece.

Regional Impact and Affected Destinations

Tel Aviv, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman, along with other regional hubs, are experiencing operational delays. Multiple Western carriers suspended flights to Israel, and this has created a setback to travel to and from Tel Aviv. In addition, flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi are being delayed due to rerouting, especially for evening flights. And as per the Lufthansa Group, Amman of Jordan has operational restrictions to be performed only in daylight.

Significant delays and canceled flights are being experienced in other regions, including India, due to the closure of a major airspace that made important routes inaccessible. Crossing the Gulf to travel to/from India has become extremely difficult. Additionally, the Western airlines have completely avoided traveling in the airspace of Iran and Iraq.

Safety Concerns and Airspace Closures

With the heightened military activity in the region, the risk of aviation has increased, and therefore the postponement and alteration of routes is a result of this. Tensions are starting to escalate again, and US officials have stated that the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group has been deployed in the Gulf, further complicating the area’s aviation safety. Due to the potential of civil aircraft being misidentified by an extremely alerted air defense system, airline representatives have expressed this as a concern, which has historically been an operating adjustment within the airline industry.

UAE authorities firmly maintain their perspective regarding the use of airspace for military activities concerning Iran, and vow to keep peace in the region, and will not open airspace to military activities against Iran. To assure peace, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the peace of airspace to travelers.

Traveler Concerns for Safety

Travelers to Dubai, and Middle Eastern countries, may experience air travel disruptions. However, travelers on the ground experience no disruptions, and disruptions in air travel safety are currently minimal. Emirates and Qatar Airways have diversions for air travel disruptions. Air travel disruptions in the Tehran FIR add 30-90 minutes to travel times.

For travelers to Middle Eastern countries, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, flight changes are common. Expect a fluid situation in Middle Eastern countries. Delays and extensive durations of travel may be expected to occur.

What Travelers Need to Know

Travel to the Middle East requires up-to-date information from both government travel advisories and the airline’s website. As the situation has improved, travel to and from the Middle East has been disrupted, and flights may be canceled or altered. If you travel to or from Israel, Iran, or Iraq, prepare for possible delays and changes to your itinerary. Keep airline reservations and travel plans flexible.

Travel to airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other parts of the Gulf may involve significant delays, changes, and even temporary cancellations. Keep in contact with your airline, especially regarding new flight routing to or from your destination.

Although many flights to and from Dubai and Abu Dhabi are currently delayed or, in some cases, canceled, several airlines, including Qatar Airways and Emirates, continue operations to Dubai, allowing travel to the UAE from many countries, including the USA.

Due to the unrest in this part of the world, travelers should remain cautious and up to date on the most current travel information.
