The airline’s leadership emphasised that the changes reflect a deep listening to frequent flyers, particularly those determined to attain and retain elite tiers such as Silver, Gold and Platinum. Qantas’ own data shows that complexity around status credit accumulation and renewal has been a central concern among members, and these reforms aim to simplify and enrich the experience of dedicated travellers.

Life Beyond the Skies: Earning Status Credits on the Ground

For the first time in its history, Qantas Frequent Flyer members will have the opportunity to earn status credits through everyday activities, not just flying. Under the new arrangement, status credits will be awarded on ground‑based activities such as spending with Qantas partners including credit cards, utilities, hotels, fuel purchases and retail spending. This brings a substantial change to how frequent flyers can progress toward their elite tier goals. The program extension will allow up to 140 extra status credits annually from these non‑flight sources, and amazingly, these on‑ground credits will also contribute toward a member’s lifetime tier accumulation — a first for the program. This means that not only is daily spending more valuable than ever, but it can also fast‑track flyers to lifelong recognition levels.

Qantas officials have stated that the adjustment was based on a highly successful trial in late 2025, where members embraced ground‑based status credit earning far beyond expectations. Seeing these results, the airline decided to make the practice a permanent feature.

Never Waste a Mile: Status Credit Rollovers Are Here

Traditionally, status credits earned by Qantas flyers expired at the end of each membership year, resetting to zero and often forcing members to start status progression afresh. This model ends with the new changes.

Under the revised system, members qualifying for status will be able to roll over a portion of their unused status credits into the next membership year. The cap and percentage differ by tier:

Silver members can carry forward a portion of credits up to a set maximum.

Gold members enjoy a higher cap.

Platinum members can roll over the largest number of credits within annual limits.

Qantas explains that this carry‑forward mechanism replaces the old loyalty bonus and provides a meaningful head start for members attempting to renew or ascend their status tiers

Lifetime Milestones: A Reward for Long‑Term Loyalty

Another transformational change is the introduction of lifetime status milestones that reward flyers based on the total status credits accumulated over years of loyalty. Under this structure, Qantas will grant additional Platinum status years to Lifetime Gold members for every incremental block of status credits achieved beyond the Gold threshold.

Qantas will phase these out, incorporating the most valued benefits directly into the core Frequent Flyer framework to reduce confusion and streamline member experiences.

Alongside this, Qantas will restructure how status targets are measured, moving to a single annual threshold for each tier rather than separate attain and retain requirements. For example, Gold status will require a unified total of status credits annually instead of distinct figures for earning and retaining.

Digital Enhancements: Making Rewards Easier to Access

Enhancing the digital experience forms another pillar of the changes. Qantas will introduce a new search tool that allows frequent flyers to find reward seats across Qantas and partner airlines quickly and easily. The tool will enable users to explore classic reward options by destination and cabin type over a 12‑month window, making planning trips with points more straightforward and intuitive.

This upgrade is timed to launch ahead of the other changes, giving members early access to improved flight reward discovery before other status benefits roll out.
