Timber Cove Resort: An Absolutely Phenomenal Stay On The Sonoma Coast
Why, hello! First off, how did you find this post? You must have been looking up stuff about Timber Cove Resort or the Sonoma Coast. Which, if you did, you’re my kind of person (slow travelers, unite)!
I’ll be honest with you, though, even as a Northern Californian, I had never even heard of Jenner, CA (let alone Timber Cove Resort) until Papu randomly got invited on a Sonoma Coast retreat with Challenge Butter and Yelp.
We’ve road tripped the Mendocino Coast and Fort Bragg area before, but we always drove inland to get there, completely skipping over coastal spots like Bodega Bay and Jenner.
When I first looked up Jenner on Google Maps, I kind of bugged out at how remote it was. Like… wow, there’s not much out there, huh? But since this was a retreat, I decided to fully embrace the remoteness. The remoteness was the point. And hey, getting there by car will be half the fun!
We turned our 2-night stay into a full Sonoma Coast road trip and went in mentally ready to unplug, reset, and escape the Bay Area hustle for a bit.
Spoiler: WOW, I was way more impressed than I expected to be.
We’re usually not the type to splurge on California resorts, but this stay was nothing short of memorable. It actually set a new standard for us and had us asking ourselves… why don’t we do this more often?
It’s such a good option for a honeymoon, Valentine’s Day, or even just a cozy weekend away from the city. The check-in staff even mentioned that weddings happen here all the time, which makes total sense once you see the setting.
Between the views, the peace and quiet, and the little luxurious touches throughout the property, this place really delivers. Here’s what our weekend looked like and what you can expect if you’re planning a stay at Timber Cove Resort.

The astounding coastal views at Timber Cove Resort.
If you’re looking for a coastal stay that actually feels like a true escape, Timber Cove Resort is IT.
The property sits up on a dramatic bluff along the Sonoma Coast where the redwoods meet the Pacific, and you feel the magic of that right away when you arrive.
The Rooms: Cozy, Woodsy, and Made For Disconnecting
The rooms were easily one of my favorite parts of the stay. There are 46 total rooms, including a handful of suites, and they all feel like their own little retreat tucked into the coastline.
You’re not going to get Four Seasons vibes, but that’s not what the property is going for anyway. It’s laidback, woodsy, and oh-so California.
First, the bed. This was easily one of the MOST comfortable beds we’ve slept in over the last five years. It rivals Westin/JW Marriott-level beds and maybe even beats some of them. If you care about sleep quality, you’re going to be very happy here.
The room design feels rustic yet sophisticated and up to date. You get a mix of high wood-beamed ceilings, leather accents, crisp white bedding, and little touches like local artwork on the walls. Most rooms face the ocean, which makes a HUGE difference when you wake up to the sun rising.
The first thing you’ll see upon stepping outside? The epic California coastline.
Aside from the view and the furnishings, what really stood out to me were the intentional in-room touches that make you kick back and slow down. You’ve got a record player in the room, yoga mats, organic bath products, plush bathrobes, and an old-school fireplace that instantly makes everything feel sooooo retreat-like.
There’s also outdoor seating so you can sip your coffee or tea while staring out at the ocean.
They do nightly turn-down service, which includes refreshing your coffee setup and setting out slippers. It’s a subtle service, yes, but it makes coming back to your room feel extra nice.
This is the type of stay where your evening plans should consist of lighting the fireplace, putting on a record, popping open a bottle of wine, wrapping up in a blanket, playing a board game (or watching Netflix), and falling asleep to the soft lull of the Pacific Ocean’s waves.
And that’s exactly what we did every night!

The Property: A Front-Row Seat To The Sonoma Coast
The rooms are wonderful indeed, but you’re not going to be staying in there 24/7. The property grounds are what REALLY make this place worth it.
The entire resort spans about 25 acres along the coastline, and you’ve got cliffs, ocean views, and forest all in one place!
There are over 2 miles of walking trails on-site, and they’re actually worth exploring. That’s right, you don’t have to drive anywhere to get to rugged coastline views. You just walk out of your room, and you’re already in it.
Every morning, we took a new trail to explore a different part of the property. The one by the parking lot was one of our favorites. We took a trail down to a remote beach where we combed for sea glass and shells. We even ran into a couple who were car camping down there (and mentally took note because what a great car camping experience that would be!).
What I liked most was how easy it was to just wander. There’s no pressure to follow a plan. You can just walk around, beach, sit around the outdoor firepits, and take everything in at your own pace.
The Great Room: Where You’ll Actually Spend Your Time
The Great Room is where you’ll naturally end up hanging out. We popped in every morning for the free pastries and coffee (because for us, housemade coffee is more inviting than the DIY ones in the room).
The first thing you’ll notice is the MASSIVE fireplace. It’s the centerpiece of the whole room and sets the tone right away. It reminded me so much of our time hanging out at lodges around Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Park!
Aside from taking a seat front and center by the fireplace, you’ve got a game library that you can use in the space or bring back to your room, plus a vinyl record library where you can pick something out to play on your in-room record player. I loved that they made it so easy to just stay in and relax.
The restaurant is attached to this space too, and it’s drop-dead GORGEOUS. Especially during sunset! We didn’t get to try the official menu since our stay had group meals prepared by the executive chef, but we met locals who said they come here JUST to eat.
One couple told us it was one of the best burgers they’ve had in their life, and they were def older and clearly knew what they were talking about.
And then there are the free nightly cookies. These deserve their own mention.
The nightly free cookies at Timber Cove Resort!
Every evening, they’d put out freshly baked cookies in the Great Room. They were soft, chewy, and sooooo good. During our stay, we thought about them multiple times a day and could not wait for nightfall so we could pop into the lobby area to stock up on them, lol!
(Obviously, calories don’t count when you’re on vacation.)
Honestly, I don’t even know why we were so fixated on the cookies. It’s such a small thing, but having something like that to look forward to every night just felt oddly comforting.
Onsite Activities: Surprisingly Retreat-Like!
Even though we didn’t get to fully try everything, we were pleasantly surprised at how many activities the resort offered. It felt way more like a retreat-style property than a typical hotel.
You can book things like guided coastal hikes, sunset meditation sessions, and even foraging experiences (for an extra cost). If you want something more low effort, you can order a coastal picnic basket and take it out to one of the scenic spots around the property.
It’s clear they want you to actually experience the environment, not just sit in your room, take photos, and leave.
Things To Do Near Timber Cove Resort
Not too far away from the property is the famed Kortum Trail.
With just one night, you could easily stay on the property the entire time and not feel like you’re missing anything.
But if you’ve got a second day and want to get out a bit, I actually have a really solid half-day coastal itinerary nearby that’s low effort but HIGH reward.
If you head south toward Bodega Bay, make it your mission to try as much clam chowder as humanly possible. I’m not even kidding, the clam chowder reigns supreme here… especially if you like the thicccck kind of clam chowder.
We tried a few different spots, and while the one at The Birds Cafe was pretty solid, we LOVED the one at Spud Point Crab Company. They totally deserve all the titles they’ve won over the years — they’ve been consistently voted the best clam chowder on the Sonoma Coast!
From there, go walk it off at Bodega Head Trail. It’s an easy loop with wide-open ocean views the entire time. You’ll probably see people whale watching or just sitting on the cliffs doing nothing, which honestly feels very on-brand for this area.
If you want another easy walk, head over to the Kortum Trail. We did the stretch from Shell Beach to Blind Beach and it was super chill and pretty (it’s out and back, so feel free to turn around at any point). It’s flat, has a mix of both dirt trails and boardwalks to walk on, and has no crazy elevation, so it works for pretty much anyone.
To wrap things up, swing by Cafe Aquatica. Grab a Dungeness crab sandwich or a lox bagel and just sit by the water. It’s a very no-rush kind of place and a perfect way to wind down before heading back to the resort.
All that said, don’t feel like you have to do any of this! The real luxury of staying at Timber Cove is having the option to do nothing at all and still feel like you had a full day.
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
Between the insanely comfortable beds, thoughtful room details, the cozy Great Room, and the rugged coastal setting, we left Timber Cove Resort really impressed.
It’s not posh or overly developed. It feels rugged, a little moody, and way more raw than other coastal destinations in California.
And based on what we heard from locals about the restaurant, we would absolutely come back just to experience the food properly next time!
That said, I do want to level set a bit. If nature and unplugging is NOT your thing, this probably isn’t the stay for you. Jenner is pretty remote, and you’re about 30+ minutes away from more traditional “things to do.” If your idea of a trip involves hopping between restaurants, shops, and attractions all day, you might feel a little bored out here.
But if what you’re looking for is exactly the opposite of what I just described (i.e. quiet coastal views, slow mornings, walks along the cliffs, and just enjoying time with your travel buddy), then this place is perfection.
