United States Joins Germany, Serbia, Austria, Italy and More as Croatia’s Tourism Industry Sees Robust Growth with Record Foreign Arrivals and Overnight Stays in December 2025

The United States joins Germany, Serbia, Austria, Italy, and more in driving Croatia’s tourism industry to new heights, as December 2025 sees record foreign arrivals and overnight stays, fueled by strong growth from key international markets.

Croatia’s tourism industry has continued to shine with impressive growth, marking a strong finish to 2025. The month of December witnessed a notable increase in both tourist arrivals and overnight stays, reinforcing the country’s appeal even during the winter months.

According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, December saw 440,000 tourist arrivals and 942,000 overnight stays in commercial accommodations. This represents a 7.3% increase in arrivals and a 7.0% rise in overnight stays compared to the same month in 2024, highlighting the resilience and growth of Croatia’s tourism sector.

On average, tourists stayed 2.1 nights during their visit. Foreign visitors made up a significant portion of these stays, contributing 64.8% of the total, with domestic tourists accounting for the remaining 35.2%. This data underscores the country’s ongoing attraction to international travelers, even in the traditionally quieter winter season.

Slovenian Tourists Lead Foreign Arrivals

For the second consecutive month, Slovenia emerged as Croatia’s leading foreign market in December. Slovenian tourists recorded 107,000 overnight stays, making up 17.6% of all foreign overnight stays in the country during the month. This represents a 14% increase compared to December 2024, further solidifying Slovenia’s importance as a key tourism market for Croatia throughout the year.

Overall, foreign visitors recorded 256,000 arrivals and 610,000 overnight stays in December. This translates to a 7.4% increase in arrivals and an 8.5% rise in overnight stays year-on-year. Domestic tourism also contributed to these positive figures, with 184,000 arrivals and 332,000 overnight stays. These results show year-on-year increases of 7.3% in arrivals and 4.2% in overnight stays, indicating a healthy balance between international and domestic tourism in Croatia.

Zagreb Continues to Dominate as Top Destination

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has once again proven to be the country’s most popular destination, maintaining its top position for both domestic and foreign tourists. For the fourth consecutive month, Zagreb recorded the highest number of domestic overnight stays, with 77,000 nights in December. While coastal destinations like Split (18,000 overnight stays), Opatija (16,000), and Dubrovnik (14,000) also remained popular, it was Zagreb that took the lead for domestic tourists.

Zagreb’s tourism growth continued to show positive trends, with a 1.7% increase in arrivals and a modest 0.3% rise in overnight stays compared to December 2024. International visitors also flocked to the Croatian capital, contributing to 165,000 foreign overnight stays. The city’s top foreign markets included Germany (9.1%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (8.2%), Italy (8.0%), Austria (6.6%), Slovenia (6.5%), Serbia (5.9%), and the United States (5.3%).

The Rise of Middle-Aged Travelers

In terms of age demographics, tourists aged 35 to 44 led the charge in overnight stays, contributing 175,000 nights, or 18.6% of all overnight stays in December. They were closely followed by the 45 to 54 age group, which generated 171,000 overnight stays, accounting for 18.1% of the total.

This shift in traveler demographics highlights a growing interest among middle-aged tourists, who continue to be a significant driving force behind Croatia’s tourism industry. As these age groups make up a substantial portion of the tourist population, the sector’s focus on catering to their preferences and needs will remain a key factor in sustaining this growth.

Looking Ahead: Positive Prospects for Croatia’s Tourism

The strong results in December 2025 reinforce Croatia’s position as a year-round destination for both domestic and international tourists. With a steady increase in both foreign arrivals and overnight stays, Croatia’s tourism sector is poised for continued growth in the coming months, driven by key markets like Slovenia, Germany, and the United States, along with a significant demographic shift towards middle-aged travelers. As the country continues to embrace tourism diversification, its winter tourism prospects remain bright, with visitors enjoying everything from the vibrant capital city of Zagreb to the coastal charm of destinations like Split and Dubrovnik.

These encouraging trends signal a positive trajectory for Croatia’s tourism in 2026, highlighting the country’s ability to attract and retain visitors despite seasonal fluctuations. As Croatia continues to build on its success, it is likely to remain one of Europe’s top travel destinations for both seasoned and first-time visitors alike.

In conclusion, Croatia’s tourism sector has demonstrated impressive resilience and growth, with December 2025 marking a standout month for both foreign and domestic arrivals. The influx of visitors from key markets such as the United States, Germany, and Slovenia highlights the country’s continued appeal across various demographics, particularly among middle-aged travelers. As Zagreb and coastal destinations like Split and Dubrovnik maintain their popularity, Croatia’s tourism outlook remains strong, positioning it as a year-round destination with ample potential for further growth in 2026. With ongoing diversification and strategic marketing efforts, Croatia is well-equipped to sustain its momentum and attract more international visitors in the years ahead.
